Campbell Takes Maiden Victory

Teenage Challenger Driver Scott Campbell took 1st place at the Cruzin’ Limousines Mainland Challenge in Canterbury over the weekend. The Mainland Challenge was the second round of the Asset Finance National Championship and Campbell’s win is expected to be the first of many for the Canterbury driver.

Campbell’s weekend started well with a 1st in class and 10th outright qualifying position. Queenstown driver Mathew Pratt made a daring pass up the inside into the first corner. The pair battle for about a lap before Campbell reclaimed the lead and began to pull out a large margin on Pratt. With clear air all around him Campbell really put his head down and started posting some very competitive lap times and managed to pass fellow Canterbury driver Bryan Chang in his GT Radials Falcon Ute. He was caught briefly by Class 8 competitor Simon Phillips and after trading positions a few times pulled away again

Campbell’s biggest challenge came from Bruce Rolls in the ex Dave Parret class 5. Bruce caught and passed Campbell but that was in no way the end of it. Campbell stayed stuck to Rolls rear cage for several laps, passing 5th place getter Donald McMillan on the way. Unfortunately Campbell developed a severe misfire and was put out of contention for bonus points, finishing 1st in Challenger and 9th overall.

With a new set of spark plugs the Allsales racing team believed they had solved the problem for Sundays short-course racing. Unfortunately the car continued to misfire for all 3 of Sundays races and Campbell was left to struggle around his home track still managing to take 3 wins.

Despite the problems Campbell faced all weekend he managed to come away from the weekend 1st in challenger and 5th overall which places him 4th in class and 15th overall in the Asset Finance National Championship. Campbell won the Canterbury Champs in class and overall last year but this was his first National victory and he is promising there are more to come.
