This weekend is the first round of the North Island ORANZ 2017 championship and is set to be a thriller. Within the sport in the last couple of years we have seen NZ1 (the overall NZ champion) come from a range different of classes. Because the overall champion is decided based on a points system, its not always the biggest and fastest cars that take the NZ title honours.

Last years champion (Mike Fraser) has not entered for the first round and will certainly give the opportunity for others to take a points advantage . We are expecting exciting racing across all classes, but with bad weather forecast for race day it would seem that the UTV or “S” class (modified UTV) cars are likely to have an advantage when it comes to outright performance.

Back again this year for anther crack at the title is the old favorite, Tony McCall in his class 1 beast. Mal Langley is on debut with his newly completed truck competing in class 8 against the likes of Nick Hall  and Jono Climo. Nick having had an amazing run at the recently completed Counties Classic series so expect Class 8 to be hotly contested.

An interesting move form Carl Ruiterman (last years class runner up) changing from the modified “S” class UTV to the standard class with his Yamaha. The “U” class UTV’s currently have a field of 9 cars with the likes of Dion Edgecombe and Polaris factory driver Dyson Delahunty  as well as last years “U” class champion Mike Alexander competing  for class points. Ben Thomasen is back (another Polaris Factory driver) and is bound to be lighting quick with his turbo charged UTV class “S” weapon.

Challenger class sees the return of Campbell Witheford doing battle against the old foe in the class as well is rising star Ollie McMcall (son of Tony McCall from Class1).

Class 3 (1600cc) and Class 5 (1300cc) buggies also have a large number of contenders with the likes of Brendon Midgley, Jarrod Marwood and Tyler Castle as the hot favorites in their respective classes.

Kiwi Truck contingent and this year sees a bigger than ever class. The Kiwi trucks are broken into 3 classes with some 17 entries and are our junior drivers (5 to 11 years of age).

This is going to be some exciting racing and all kicks off Sunday at 9:30am at the ATR race track (Dragway Road, Meremere).
